Indian Railways Inks MoU with CII to Scale-Up its Green Mission

Indian Railways and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) have entered into the next phase of partnership for facilitating green initiatives in the country’s largest public sector transporter.


The MoU was inked in the presence of Suresh C Angadi, Minister of State for Railways by Shivendra Mohan, Executive Director, Railway Board and S Raghupathy, Dy. Director General & COO, CII.


Speaking at the occasion, Angadi, said that the Indian Railways has always been in the forefront in fostering eco-friendly practices and approaches. The Railways had adopted a blend of energy and environmental approaches, coupled with appropriate technological interventions, in addressing ecological issues, added the minister. Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai and Modern Coach Factory (MCF), Raebareli have already become energy neutral and Indian Railways, as a whole, aspired to soon become fully energy neutral, underlined the minister. 


Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII said that, many path-breaking initiatives had already been taken by the Indian Railways for going the green and energy efficient way. Railways had carved a niche of its own in demonstrating to the global community that even public sector enterprises can set new global benchmarks in resource conservation, energy and environmental management.


Rajesh Agrawal, Member, Rolling Stock (MRS) said that Indian Railways, through its concerted efforts is making a significant impact in environmental conservation. He also laid emphasis on converting railway schools into green schools.

 

Earlier, CII signed a MoU with Indian Railways in July 2016. As a result of concerted efforts, significant progress was made towards greening of railway stations, buildings, workshops and production units as well as energy management facilitation in workshops. These initiatives have resulted in savings of Rs 9.7 million annually to Railways.


Encouraged by the impact results, Railways and CII have decided to take forward the environmental sustainability initiatives to the next level through the MoU. CII will continue to partner with Railways on net-zero buildings, greening of built environment, GreenCo rating, greening of railway stations, energy efficiency, technologies, capacity building and other related areas.
